The Whipping Post Messenger Bag Review

I’ve been using a basic incase messenger bag for the last couple years, and figured it was time to upgrade. I was looking for something a little more stylish, with some extra room to fit my camera and accessories.

As it turns out, finding a simple messenger bag that meets those criteria was surprisingly hard. I was either finding overly designed camera bags that would do everything I wanted, or great looking bags that didn’t have enough room to hold a 15″ laptop.

Right when I was about to buy the Ona Union Street Bag, I discovered The Whipping Post and immediately changed my mind when I saw the mailman bag styled messenger on the site.

Here is a quick video on the vintage messenger back from the owner of Whipping Post.

Fast forward a couple days and I’m tearing open the package at home. Here is a more detailed look at the contents.

Upon opening the package, you’re presented with this cool card with a message from the founder and a little patch.

Unwrap the craft paper and you’re presented with this beauty. Super clean front, made with 100% vegetable tanned leather, with a simple clasp to attach everything together.

The back is just as clean, with a simple handle and a large pocket taking up it’s entirety.

The construction is on point, and the leather quality is great. The stitching looks even throughout, and there doesn’t seem to be any points that looks like they can’t take proper weight.

I really like the front clasp. It’s fast to open, which is great when you’re carrying a camera around.

The attention to detail really shines through on these small bits. Perfect spacing considering everything is handmade.

The strap is a bit stiff at first, but it will break in over time. The embossed W + P is a nice touch.

Opening it up, you can see how much room is inside. A small pocket for a laptop in the back, as well as some open room in the front. I do wish there were dividers inside, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

The laptop pocket is utilizing a much softer leather to avoid any scratches.

A 15″ laptop fits with a generous amount of room to spare. I want to say a 17″ could fit, but it would be really really snug.

Quality hardware is used throughout.

There is a little pocket on the front that could hold a small notebook.

Here is what I would need to carry on a daily basis (maybe not the umbrella).

Overall I’m very impressed with the vintage mailbag design and overall quality, and can’t wait to see what it looks like when the leather gets a patina over the next few years.
